Trachycarpus Fortunei – Himalayan Palm  – From the Chinese Himalayan Mountains this is one of the world’s hardiest palms. It is extremely well suited to the majority of British locations and as such has won the prestigious RHS Award of Garden Merit (H3-H4)

It was successfully introduced from China by the famous plant hunter Robert Fortune in the mid-1800s. Today, there are spectacular specimens on public and private gardens proving that they adapt easily to our climate.

It may be planted outside and will generally tolerate frost and snow without the need for winter protection. However, it should not be considered for exposed coastal locations such as sea fronts. Nevertheless, if planted behind a wall sheltered from high winds and sea spray, it will perform well.

Plant Description

A mature plant develops an almost spherical plume of fan-shaped fronds borne on top of a slender trunk. The diameter of which is similar to that of a telegraph pole. The trunk is covered in a mass of coarse woven hair lending a very exotic appearance. If required, the hair maybe removed revealing a slender ringed trunk.

Our UK grown plants have already experienced British winter temperatures and are sold with complete root systems having always been grown in containers.

This palm comes with our highest recommendation as an easy to grow yet relatively inexpensive palm.

Exotic and tropical in appearance, it will give a garden height without taking over as its spread is only a few feet from the trunk to the tips of the leaves.
