Description
Origin
Originating in China and Japan, this is quite a rare sight in Britain and is normally only available from specialist suppliers.
Known as the Miniature Chusan Palm, its compact stiff fronds rarely exceed 60cm across. Whilst, slow-growing it will eventually grow into a small slender palm. It is considered to be one of the most cold hardy of all the palms if not the hardiest palm of all.
Suitability
It may be planted outside and will tolerate frost and snow without the need for winter protection. Its stiff deep glossy green fronds enable it to withstand exposed windy locations; as such it is suitable for planting just about anywhere in the British Isles.
Our UK grown plants have already experienced British winter temperatures and are sold with complete root systems having always been grown in containers.
Plant Description
Whilst there are many great palms for this country Trachycarpus wagnerianus is the very best palm to grow outside in Great Britain. Nicknamed “Waggy”, it is a very beautiful palm. Its growth is similar to its well-known relative, Trachycarpus fortunei .
However, Trachycarpus wagnerianus have more compact and stiff leaves making them very tolerant of exposed windy conditions. Trachycarpus wagnerianus is a slow-growing palm which makes it more valuable than Trachycarpus fortunei but it’s worth every penny.
